Personality:
Rogue’s powers robbed her of the ability to be an average teenage girl. They render her incapable of having normal human contact, unable to even hold hands or have a cheek to cheek hug without endangering the person she's with - and it’s constantly on her mind. Her powers have largely kept her from entering into any sort of romantic entanglement, as well - though, like just about everyone else, she longs to find that special someone. She tries to make the best of her situation, as she is unable to change it, but Rogue is still prone to fits of depression over it.
She is a charming Southern girl - or at least that's what she'd have you think. She was well coached in the arts of proper etiquette by her aunt Carrie, and she can put up an excellent facade. However, she has a hard time keeping her thoughts to herself, which as Aunt Carrie would say, is not very ladylike.
Rogue has a sharp wit and a fierce temper. She can come across as steely and or cold to strangers, but her true friends know Rogue to be a kind and loving soul. She is very carefree, despite all she's been through. She once considered the Brotherhood to be her true family, having put her father, Aunt Carrie, and Mississippi right out of her mind. Since then, the X-Men have become her new family.
Over time, and with practice, Rogue has come to largely embrace her mutant power. She likes to use it to sample other people's powers; but, she isn't so much a fan of having their personality take control. She is also incredibly hesitant about copying physical mutations, like wings, horns, strangely-colored skin, a tail - what have you. She worries that somehow it might become permanent and not fade away, and she’ll look like a weirdo for the rest of her days. Yet, she doesn’t usually get much of a choice over who her next victim may be in the heat of a battle.
Appearance:
Rogue is a petite young woman who appears more like a classic waif than a dangerous threat, even though her powers make her actually the latter rather than the former. Naturally having dark brown, almost auburn hued hair, she also has developed a white streak that now grows naturally into the face-framing portion of her hair. She stands at 5’ 8” and has blue eyes. Rogue is almost always seen wearing gloves, but this is for function rather than fashion purposes. She has a pair in almost every color, to go with almost any outfit - though, green is her favorite color.
Powers & Abilities:
Primary: Tactile Power/Psyche Duplication, Telepathic Immunity (but only when she has a copied psyche in her head)
Permanently Copied Powers:
Flight, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Enhanced Constitution
Items & Resources:
Rogue will almost always be seen wearing a pair of gloves - usually opera-length - to help prevent her powers from accidentally activating. Covering up as much skin as possible is currently the only way she knows how to control her powers, and as it would be impractical to cover up the entirety of her body, this is only somewhat effective.
Home Reality:
Rogue comes from the Comic-616 reality, as does the Carol Danvers mentioned in her History (ie: Rogue’s History has no impact on the MCU-616 Carol Danvers).
History:
Rogue's parents, Owen and Priscilla, married quite young and early in their relationship. They lived in a commune near their hometown of Caldecott County, Mississippi. Her given name is Anna Marie, and while growing up, she also enjoyed the attentions of her Aunt Carrie - her mother’s sister. The commune's failed attempt to use Native American mysticism to reach an astral dimension called the Far Banks resulted in Priscilla's disappearance. Her aunt Carrie took in Owen, and she also took over Anna Marie's care. In her grief at the loss of her sister, Carrie became a strict and authoritarian guardian. Anna Marie was a rebellious child, and her poor relationship with her father and her aunt triggered her to run away from home. This behavior also prompted the nickname "Rogue". The first time she ran away, she was ten. She would do this several more times, until she finally got away for good at thirteen years old.
Shortly after emancipating herself, Rogue was approached by Mystique, who sought her out on the advice of her precognitive partner Destiny. The two women looked after Rogue as if they were her own parents, eventually adopting her.
Having been raised in the traditions of the South by her old fashioned aunt, Anna Marie believed in true romance, and although she was a flirt and never lacked attention from the boys, she held out for someone special - someone who she felt was worthy of giving her heart to. At age sixteen, Rogue grew close to a boy named Cody Robbins. During their flirtation, she impulsively kissed Cody, at which point her latent mutant power to copy the life energy and psyche of others through skin-to-skin contact emerged. As their lips touched, Rogue felt the electricity between them, but what she didn't know was that this sort of "electric" tingling feeling was actually her mutant power manifesting for the first time. The next thing she knew, she was overwhelmed with the sensation that she was thinking what he would have been thinking, if he had been aware... A split second later, she felt his body slump over, clearly unconscious, down onto her bed. Rogue started to scream uncontrollably. Cody was left in a coma from which he would likely never awaken, and Rogue was traumatized by the experience.
Naturally, Mystique and Destiny were elated to discover that their little foundling was a mutant. However, Rogue couldn’t control her abilities. Her foster mothers decided to invite her to join the Brotherhood, in hopes that she might be able to master her mutant abilities while working and training alongside other mutants.
One day, Rogue overheard part of a conversation between her foster mothers - they were discussing a premonition of Destiny’s about someone incredibly dangerous who would one day pose a threat to them: Ms. Marvel. Knowing she wasn’t supposed to have overheard their conversation, Rogue kept it to herself - but she also took it upon herself to hunt down this person and take them out - that way, Destiny’s premonition wouldn’t be able to come to fruition, and her family would be safe.
But… Rogue was still struggling with her powers…
She eventually tussled with Ms. Marvel. It wasn’t easy, but somehow Rogue managed to get a hold of the super-strong, nearly invulnerable woman with her bare hands - and she held on for dear life. Meanwhile, Rogue’s powers kicked on and began to copy Ms. Marvel’s powerset to her DNA, and her psyche within her mind. Now, with Ms. Marvel’s mighty abilities, Rogue could have probably easily managed to knock her out of the sky… throw her for a loop… but instead, she kept on holding on with a death grip.
Rogue wasn’t going to let this person hurt anyone she cared about - period! But, she’d never held onto someone for this long before… Most people would have passed out by now…
Then, suddenly, everything went wonky, and Rogue panicked...
She can’t seem to remember exactly what happened with Ms. Marvel, afterward - she probably received medical attention and would probably be alright (unless, like Cody, she wouldn’t wake back up again) - but that didn’t matter. What did matter, was that Mystique and Destiny would be safe because Ms. Marvel was down for the count.
Now, what Rogue had failed to overhear from Destiny’s premonition was not that Ms. Marvel posed an imminent threat to her adoptive mothers, but rather, that she would cost Rogue her soul. In fact, the relatively brief encounter didn’t leave Rogue unscathed - just as Destiny had foreseen. The Southern belle came out of the fight as the winner, yes, but… the copied powerset and psyche of her victim continued to linger within Rogue’s system… There was now a near-constant nagging in the back of her mind, as if Ms. Marvel (who Rogue now knew to be Carol Danvers) had been squeezed into Rogue’s brain, and she was not happy about it.
It would have been enough to drive anyone insane. Rogue, though… well, she was made of sterner stuff (though, she doesn’t necessarily believe that).
After several weeks, Carol’s copied psyche hadn’t yet faded away, nor had the other woman’s copied powers: Flight, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Durability, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, and Enhanced Constitution. However, she still had zero control over her touch-based powers.
She had gone to her foster mothers to tell them what had happened and to plead for any help they may be able to provide… but they had no help to offer. Besides, they were also quite embroiled in the Brotherhood's schemes - perhaps too preoccupied, for it was simply too easy for Rogue to slip out and away from the Brotherhood. She had decided that if the Brotherhood couldn’t help her, then she needed to look elsewhere - she just couldn’t live like this!
And that is how Rogue wound up at the X-Men’s doorstep. Their leader, Professor Charles Xavier, was probably her only hope. She’d heard that they would open their doors to any and all mutants - especially those that needed help (and Rogue needed help so badly), but… would they be able to see beyond her troubled past? Would they accept her? Or would they kick her to the curb for her former allegiance to the Brotherhood?
Xavier's charity towards all mutants led him to welcome her into his home, regardless of his team (as well as the Avengers) having previously fought against Rogue - and in spite of the X-Men's own strong disagreements to her presence. Xavier psychically examined her and invited her to join the X-Men and live at the mansion. Her initial months with the team were rough, and some of the team even threatened to leave if she was allowed to stay - some had even been friends with her last victim - but Professor Xavier reminded them of their ideals as X-Men, and they (perhaps begrudgingly) wound up giving her a chance - over time, she has earned the respect of all the X-Men and became a valued, trusted member of the team.
Among the X-Men, Rogue's life has begun to improve, and Carol Danvers' residual personality eventually faded away.
