Illyana is a very focused and determined young woman. She knows what she wants and will do whatever is necessary to achieve her goals. She has been hung up on locating the Beatrice Medallion and restoring the pieces of her soul that Belasco took from her, ever since she returned to Earth. The fact that she has not yet found it is a great source of anxiety.
Before she was kidnapped by Belasco and taken to Limbo, Illyana was a warm and friendly little girl; although when people first met her, she could seem quiet and perhaps shy - but she's not. Not at all.
Since defeating Belasco, Illyana has become Darker... When her inner-Darkness is at its strongest, such as when she is angry or stressed out, the Darkness can take over, transforming Illyana's petite form into that of a fierce demoness. When in her demonic form, Illyana calls herself the Darkchilde, and she is almost like a completely different person: colder, more ruthless, and perhaps even mean; before her time in Limbo, Illyana wouldn't have hurt a fly.
Illyana is proud of her Russian heritage, but she has decided that since she would like to better blend into American society. To this end, she has managed to mostly repress her Russian accent (or rather, what’s left of it after seven years of living in Hell) - it’s really only audible when she's exhausted.
Appearance:
Illyana is a petite young lady with icy blue eyes and silky pale blonde hair - she is much smaller than her big brother, Piotr (Colossus) and stands at roughly 5’ 5”. Illyana is not bothered with "fashion" and will wear whatever she grabs from her closet, whether it be a long, flowing skirt, cute dress, or a pair of ripped and faded jeans and a black leather jacket.
Powers & Abilities:
Sorcery, Teleportation Discs, Demonic Form (with Psionic Shielding)
Items & Resources:
- The Soulsword
- Mystical Eldritch Armor
- The Beatrice Medallion (missing; 3/5 Bloodstones have been created)
- Belasco’s former castle in Limbo, including its massive Occult library and collection of magickal artifacts
Home Reality:
Illyana comes from the Comic-616 reality.
History:
Born on her family’s farm in Lake Baikal, Siberia, to Nikolai and Alexandra Rasputin, Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina is the baby sister of Mikhail and Piotr. One day while little Illyana was outside playing in the fields, she had unknowingly put herself in the path of Danger: a piece of heavy farming equipment nearly ran her down, but she was saved by her hero - her favorite brother, Pitor. He had transformed into a man of steel, and he had stopped the machinery from crushing his baby sister.
Illyana was amazed at his transformation and excited about what Piotr could do. After this incident, Piotr and Illyana became much closer to each other, although he had always been there for her as her older brother, just like Mikhail had been to him, and he nicknamed her his "Little Snowflake". Colossus eventually sent for her to join him at the Xavier estate in America when she was still just a little girl.
Illyana would grow close to all of the X-Men, but especially Kitty Pryde. Before the Limbo incident, Kitty used to read her bedtime stories and otherwise go out of her way to spend time with the little girl.
No one was certain if Illyana would ever manifest mutant abilities, but if she ever did, she was in the best place possible to help her safely learn how to use them. However, it was very possible that perhaps Illyana wasn't a mutant, after all...
But, mutant or not, Illyana was special. When she was just six years old, Illyana was kidnapped by an evil sorcerer named Belasco and taken to Limbo. Belasco told her he loved her, and then he turned part of her soul into a Bloodstone, giving Illyana a great potential for power, and also allowing him to more easily manipulate her (and eventually, he planned to use her as a pawn to bring forth the Elder Gods).
In Limbo, Illyana was often cruelly beaten by Belasco's demonic servant, S'ym. She also encountered alternate versions of the X-Men - she was even rescued once from Belasco by Storm and Cat, alternate versions of Ororo Munroe and Kitty Pryde. For quite a while, Illyana was instructed in white magicks by Storm and instructed in combat by Cat, while the three of them lived in hiding from the evil sorcerer.
After a failed attempt to return to her own reality, Illyana gave in and reluctantly agreed to become Belasco's apprentice, and she was determined to use everything she'd learned from Storm and Cat to retain and protect her soul from Belasco. That was easier said than done, however, as Belasco was able to force Illyana to kill her allies, one by one.
After having been Belasco's prisoner apprentice for many years, Illyana's mutant power over teleportation finally manifested - and quite by accident, too. Apparently, her desire to leave Limbo and return Home was so strong that she was able to create a "stepping disc" to take her there. Stepping through it, she teleported herself to her parents' farm. Sadly, as many years had passed for Illyana while in Limbo, they did not recognize her, and they turned her away. They believed that their little girl was still safe with their son in America - and that she was still just a little girl, and not the fierce looking young woman that stood at their door.
Disheartened, Illyana returned to Limbo where she magically used her own life force energies to create the Soulsword, which she then used to defeat Belasco. Just before she made the killing stroke with her Soulsword, she stopped. Illyana did not want to become any darker than he had already made her - she didn't want to be anything like Belasco! So, instead of killing him, she exiled him from Limbo. Due to this victory, Illyana became the unquestioned ruler of Limbo. Finally, Illyana was now able to create another stepping disc that would finally allow her to return to Earth.
It took seven years for Illyana to escape.
Her miraculous return to the X-Mansion occurred only seconds after she'd originally been taken. Everyone expected to see the same, sweet little six-year-old blonde girl that had stood among them but a moment before, so one can imagine the shock they felt when the beautiful young lady told them who she was.
As strange as her claim was, the X-Men believed her and took her to Professor Xavier for further examination. He found that he was unable to mentally probe her overly much, but he could see, for the most part, that her story checked out. This young woman was indeed Illyana Rasputina.
Illyana quickly learned that she was not nearly as powerful a sorceress on Earth as she was in Limbo (it might behoove her to become a more powerful magic user’s apprentice while on Earth; however, in Limbo, she is Sorceress Supreme). She does, however, still retain a near immunity to the most powerful telepathic probes while in her demonic form, and she's mastered controlling where her stepping discs will lead. She does regularly check in on Limbo to ensure that everything is as it should be, and that there hasn’t been a demon uprising or anything.
